Materials: student
activity sheet and photograph#1,
student activity sheet and photograph #2
Procedures:
- Imagine someone from outside the New York area learning about the Statue
of Liberty. Instead of having a picture, the only have words to describe her.
Do you think they would get a clear picture in their minds of what she looks
like?
- Introduce the idea that photographs can help us visualize landscapes, dwellings
and other features of places that are unfamiliar to us.
- Introduce the terms, foreground and background.
- Have students look at this
photo. They can also access this from the Student
Activity page.
- Ask the students, "What do you think the subject of this photo is?"
Discuss and ask for details from the photo. Ask, "What do you think the
people of this town used to build their homes?". Discuss and ask for
details from the photo to support answer.
- Have students finish the rest of the activity on their own.
- Students can go on to the second
photo analysis if they finish with time remaining.
Assessment and Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on how they evaluated the details from the photos
to draw conclusiong.
Acceptable: Some responses are correct and details from photos to support
answers are given. Opinion presented does not use information from the photo.
Commendable: Most responses are correct and details from photos are
given to support answers. Opinion represented include some details from photo.
Outstanding: All responses are correct and details from photos are given
to support answers. Opinion represented include extensive details from photo.
