This interdisciplinary semester course is the result of
the collaboration of the Physical Education and English
departments. Students will study dance and movement as a
vehicle for communication and analysis. They become familiar
with several choreographic and dance techniques, especially
that of the famous Martha Graham. Students then use these
various dance styles to interpret the literature studied.
The course is co-taught by an English teacher and
Dance/Physical Educator with musical assistance from the NYC
Graham School of Dance (the result of a grant through the
cultural arts program). Students receive both physical
education and dance credit for this course. Dance and Movement I This class is a foundation class in Dance and Movement.
Students will develop kinesthetic awareness through dance
forms such as Modern Dance, Jazz, Ballet, ethnic and Dance
Improvisation. Students will also begin to explore
choreographing the elements of dance composition. Basic
concepts of Dance and Movement will be introduced such as:
movement sequencing, rhythmic patterns, physical strength,
flexibility and endurance, along with movement elements
which include time, space, weight and effort. The course
will enhance the aesthetic development of each student
through activities that encourage verbal, written and
physical approaches to Dance and Movement.
Dance and Movement II will provide students with
intermediate/advanced study of dance forms such as: Modern
Dance, Jazz, Ballet and improvisation. Students will study
different dance styles within each dance form which will
develop physical strength and endurance while expanding
their movement vocabulary and ability to execute diverse

each dance form. Historical aspects of each dance form will
be explored as well as dance analysis through verbal, visual
and written forms. |
