Peer Pressure

How do you feel when you get forced into something you don’t want to do by your friends? Bad, right? Do you ever feel that you want to fit in, but you have to do something bad to be able to? Many people ask, “If everyone jumped off the Empire State Building, would you?” But it’s not really like that.

A lot of bad things kids do are caused by peer pressure. Peer pressure is when your peers, people who are about the same age as you, are influencing you to do things you don’t want to do. But peer pressure can be good. For example, if your friends urge you to play sports instead of take drugs, that would be good. But most peer pressure is bad. If all of your friends smoke, and they urge you to smoke also and because you don’t, you don’t fit in, does that mean that you should smoke? NO! Just because your friends are persuading you to do something that you don’t think is right, doesn’t mean that you have to do it too! May be they’re not really your friends, then.

Well, maybe you are the type of person who wouldn’t give in to peer pressure. That’s really good. If you aren’t, though, you have to be yourself and not give in. If you can do it once, then you will feel confident that you can do it again, in other circumstances.

Always believe in yourself. That’s the key to success!
