Blubber Mitten
Do you think a nice layer of blubber would be great protection against the cold?
Walrus, whales and seals also have wonderful layers of blubber which help to keep them warm.
We decided to try our hands in a homemade "blubber mitten" experiment.

For this experiment, we used Crisco, sandwich bags, and a bowl of ice water. First, we filled one of the zipper bags with about 1/3 cup of Crisco. Then, we turned another sandwich bag inside out. The bags were zipped together to make a seal. This created a "blubber mitten" for us to put our hands in. Then, we put our bare hands into the bowl of cold water to feel how cold it was. After that, we placed our hand in the "blubber mitten" and into the bowl of ice water. We realized that our hand that was insulated with the "blubber mitten" did not feel the cold water. This experiment demonstrated how Polar Bears and other Arctic animals are able to swim in the ice cold Arctic waters.
